What is Indus Water Treaty ?

This treaty is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan. It was an agreement made in the presence of the World Bank. The issue was to use the water of the Indus River and its tributaries. It was signed on 19 September 1960 in Karachi. India got control of three Eastern rivers: the Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas; on the other hand, Pakistan got control over three Western rivers: the Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus. This treaty went in favour of Pakistan because they got 70% of the water and India got 30%. India can use some parts of water from Pakistan’s share, but only for non-consumptive uses such as power generation, navigation, and fish culture.
